UPCOMING YOUTHSTAGE PROGRAMS – WINTER & SPRING 2017 NOW ENROLLING!
WCMT’s YouthStage programs are theatre performance programs for Grades 3-8. Each of these programs ends in fully-produced, ticketed performances in our theatre, the new Jefferson Playhouse. Intermediate level meets Mondays, and is for Grades 3 & 4. The program ends in a one-act (70-75 minute) production. Advanced level meets Wednesdays and some Saturdays. The Advanced program is designed for 4th-8th grades. The final performance is two weekends of a 100-110 minute production for the public. The Winter 2017 program, JAMES & THE GIANT PEACH, is open to Grades 3-8 and runs for 11 weeks, with shows in March.
The Spring program & show, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA, will also combine all-youth ages together for one big, bold, beautiful production. This program begins in March with performances in June.
GRADES 3-8: One of Roald Dahl’s most beloved works – and many of our students will have read and studied this book recently in their own classroom! When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach – among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities – but, after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James’ creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family. The dangerous voyage is a success, but the adventure takes a whole new twist once they land on the Empire State Building. This new musical is written by the award-winning duo of Pasek & Paul. The fresh, uplifting score includes songs like: “Right Before Your Eyes,” “Shake It Up,” “Plump & Juicy” and “Welcome Home.” Wanna know more about the show? GRADES 3-8: The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits. In this specially adapted Youth version, all the beloved songs and familiar characters are present and accounted for. However, the entire script has been condensed to better suit young attention spans, and the plot has been slightly altered so as to highlight some important lessons that exist in this timeless tale. JUST ANNOUNCED: Mr. Jerry (our founding artistic director) will be directing this exciting program!
