ABOUT THE CONSERVATORY FOR YOUNG ARTISTSFounded in 2012, as Youth Company Chicago, youth programming has always been the heart of our company. The newly named Conservatory for Young Artists is more than just a school; it is an artistic home where students learn, grow and thrive through their study of the performing arts. Our teaching artists are guided by SPACE – five values that have formed the foundation of our success with children of all ages:
- Students as Artists
- Parental Involvement
- Access for All
- Challenge & Support
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PROGRAMS
Youth Company is a theatre performance program for Grades 3-8. Each Youth Company session ends in a fully-produced, ticketed show with multiple weekends of performances in our theatre. This intermediate-advanced performance program meets twice weekly for 14-15 weeks.
Teen Company is an intensive performance program for Grades 8-12 (or Ages 13-17). Students in the program prepare for multiple performances of the final show–fully-produced, with professionally designed costumes, sets, props, lighting, and a live orchestra in our new theatre space. The Teen program meets three times a week for approximately 9 weeks.
Little actors making big choices in our KidStage performance classes! In these 9-11 week classes, students learn beginning-level skills in drama, music, movement. They learn to express themselves, work with others, follow directions, and pull together a complete story with elements like costumes, props and live musical accompaniment. These programs end in a lightly-produced performance of songs and scenes from a musical play in our theatre – with friends and family invited to celebrate the accomplishments of our youngest artists. No audition, and no previous experience necessary.
Studio classes are 10-11 week programs based on a specific theme or skill. Our studio classes are a great way to dabble in in the performing arts. We offer different courses each semester, so there is always an opportunity to try new things….from Song & Dance based on a current Broadway hit, to Dance Intensive, to Costume, Make-Up and Lighting Design, to Stage Combat.
Summer camps are a great way for experienced performers to continue their growth in a more intensive setting, or for younger artists to dabble in theatre and the performing arts. In addition to being educational, our summer camps are lots of fun. Students spend half- or full-days with us participating in rehearsals, games, outdoor activities, and making new friends – right in the heart of Jefferson Park.
Our Schoolsite programs are music theatre education programs that meet right at your school. Students in the program meet with our teaching artists once a week over the course of 11-14 weeks (depending on the school calendar and our own performance calendar). The final product is a produced musical, with costume, scenic elements, props, and live musical accompaniment, usually in the school auditorium, parish hall, or cafeteria. Depending on the length of the rehearsal process, our final performance is a 45-60 minute production. Each school decides whether or not to ticket the show, invite the public, use the tickets as a fundraiser, etc. We also provide 1st and 2nd grade “junior” programs at some schoolsites.
